DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1602 July 27, 2007


Northwestern United States:
Dense smoke is still visible stretching from the larges fires in
northeastern Oregon and western Idaho to most of Montana. The fire in
western Siskiyou County in northern California continues to produce
moderate smoke that reaches into SW Oregon.

Southeastern Canada/Great Lakes:
A large area of thin to moderately dense smoke from fires in N
Saskatchewan/N Manitoba and the northwestern United States is visible
over the Great lakes and most of southeastern Canada.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
