DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215 July 28, 2007

Pacific Northwest:
Large area of smoke was moving generally towards the northeast and
extended from northern California, much of Oregon and eastern Washington,
across central Idaho into Montana. Moderate to dense smoke was being
generated by the Elk Complex in northern California, the WSA Lightning
Complex in Oregon and Idaho's Middle Fork Complex, Trapper Ridge WFU
and Battle Creek Complex.

Great Lakes:
A large area of thin residual smoke from fires in N Saskatchewan/N
Manitoba was moving southeastward, approaching Lake Superior.

Southern California:
Narrow band of moderate smoke was moving east from the Zaca fire in
Santa Barbara County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
