DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2030 UTC August 6, 2007

California/Nevada/Idaho/Montana:
The wildfire in Santa Barbara county in the Sierra Madre Mountains is
producing a large area of moderately dense to dense smoke moving east
across southern California. Moderate smoke is moving across northern
Ventura and Los Angeles, southern Kern and central San Bernardino. Smoke
is beginning to move into southern Nevada based on latest satellite
imagery. Residual smoke from this wildfire is moving across parts of
southern and central/eastern Nevada and into northwest Arizona, parts
of western/central Utah and southern Wyoming.

Idaho/Montana/Alberta/Saskatchewan/North Dakota:
Wildfires in Idaho are producing thick smoke at the source, but moderate
smoke across parts of Montana, southern Alberta and Saskatchewan and
into parts of western North Dakota. Smoke in Montana is moderately
dense and becomes light in North Dakota.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
