DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215 UTC August 7, 2007

Lower Mississippi Valley:
Several agricultural fires along the Mississippi River, mainly in
Arkansas and Louisiana are producing very light puffs of smoke moving
to the northeast that last less than two hours in duration.

Oklahoma/Kansas:
Massive amounts of agricultural fires flared up throughout the day in
Oklahoma and Kansas, several of which are producing light plumes of
smoke that are moving to the north northeast.

California/Nevada/Utah/Idaho:
The large fire located in eastern Santa Barbara county of southwest
California continues producing massive amounts of dense to very
dense smoke. This plume is originally moving to the east and is highly
affecting Kern and Ventura counties, where it then turns to the northeast
and moves completely throughout central Nevada, northeast Arizona,
western Utah and up into southern Idaho. The densest smoke is found
rather local to the fire, in the three counties mentioned above, but there
is also a moderately dense area of smoke located in south central Nevada.

There is also a large fire in southeast Idaho, located in Power county,
that flared up late in the evening. The plume is moving to the northeast
and mainly consists of moderately dense to dense smoke.

Oregon:
A fire in Jefferson county of northwest Oregon is producing a plume
of moderately dense smoke that is fanning out to both the northwest
and northeast.

Washington:
Several smaller fires in south central Washington are producing light
puffs of smoke that are moving to the northeast.

Montana/Canada/Dakota's:
The massive amount of large fires located in western Montana continue
producing very large amounts of very dense smoke. All of the smoke is
moving to the east and slightly to the north. The densest of the smoke
reaches about halfway across Montana, the rest of it can be seen moving
through southern Canada, and halfway through North and South Dakota. The
largest of these fires are located in Lincoln, Flathead and Sanders
counties, which are in the northwest part of Montana:

Canada:
On the border of Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories, a group of
fires are producing moderately dense to dense smoke that is moving to
the northeast.

Michigan:
The fire in Luce county continues to burn and produce a plume of
moderately dense smoke that is moving to the southeast out over Lake
Huron.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
