DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z UTC August 8, 2007

Eastern US:
A large area of remnant smoke from the ID/MT fires mixed with haze can
be seen stretching from the Great Lakes region, out over the Atlantic
Ocean, moving south along the Mississippi River and into the Gulf of
Mexico/southern Florida. The massive area of smoke seemed to have
shifted closer to the east coast and out over the Atlantic Ocean later
in the evening.

Michigan:
The fire in Luce county was seen producing dense to very dense smoke
early in the evening that was moving to the north into southern Ontario.
Later in the evening the smoke was mixed in with clouds and was unable
to determine in which direction it was moving as it got mixed in with
the massive area of smoke moving east from the fires in Montana and Idaho.

Arizona:
A fire in Coconino county is producing a light plume of smoke that is
moving to the east northeast, not extending very far from the fire.

Minnesota:
A large group of fires on the northern tip of Minnesota can be seen
producing plumes of light to moderately dense smoke that are moving to
the east southeast.

California:
The large fire in Santa Barbara county of southwest California continues
to produce large amounts of dense smoke that is fanning out to the
southeast.

Further north a fire in Calaveras county flared up late in the evening
and is producing moderately dense smoke that is moving to the northeast.

Just north of that, a fire in Yuba county has given off several puffs
of light to moderately dense smoke that is moving to the northeast,
but looks to be dying out.

Oregon:
Several fires in southeast Oregon are producing large plumes of moderately
dense to dense smoke that are moving directly to the east into southern
Idaho.

There is also a fire in north central Oregon that is producing moderately
dense smoke that is moving to the east.

Idaho/Montana/Canada/Dakota's/Minnesota:
The enormous fires throughout central Idaho and western Montana continued
producing massive amounts of very dense smoke throughout the day. The
massive plume of smoke is heading slightly to the northeast, where it
moves into central Saskatchewan and Manitoba before moving back to the
southeast into the Dakota's and Minnesota. The densest part of this
massive area of smoke can be found moving through most of Montana,
and into central Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
