DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z UTC August 10, 2007

Oregon:
A big fire near western boundary of Jefferson county is producing a
locally dense plume of smoke that is moving easterly across Oregon and
Idaho Panhandle into northwestern corner of Montana.

California:
The fire in Santa Barbara is still producing a moderately dense plume of
smoke that is moving both westerly and northeasterly and the residual
smoke has formed a belt area and has covered San Luis Obispo, Kern and
Inyo counties.

Montana/North Dakota/Minnesota/the Great Lakes/Saskatchewan/Manitoba:
The residual smoke from the large fires in northwestern US can still be
seen in satellite imagery this morning. A moderately dense to locally
dense area of smoke has covered northern Montana, northern North Dakota,
southern Saskatchewan, and southern Manitoba. Minnesota, southern Ontario,
and the Great Lakes are covered by thin to moderately dense smoke.

Northern Florida/southern Georgia/southern Alabama/the Atlantic
coast/northern Gulf of Mexico:
A large area of thin to moderately dense smoke has covered the areas
mentioned above.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
