DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z UTC August 14, 2007

California:
The large fires in Santa Barbara are still producing very dense plumes
of smoke that are moving northeasterly across San Luis Obispo, Kern,
Tulare, and Fresno counties reaching the western boundary of Mono
county. However, the residual smoke from these fires are also very dense
which is also moving northeasterly across western Nevada and southern
Idaho and has merged with the dense smoke from the large fires in Idaho
and Montana. A fire in eastern Siskiyou county of northern California
is producing a thin to moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving
northeasterly into central Lake county of southern Oregon.

Oregon/Washington:
The big fire at the Jefferson-Marion county boundary is producing a
locally dense plume of smoke that is moving northeasterly into Klickitat
county of southern Washington. A big fire in Chelan county of northern
Washington is producing a locally dense plume of smoke that is moving
northeasterly into Okanogan county near the US-Canada border.

British Columbia:
Two fires in southern British Columbia of Canada are producing moderately
dense plumes of smoke that are moving northeasterly.

Northern Rockies/Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valleys/the Great
Lakes/Ohio Valley/Tennessee Valley/southern Saskatchewan/southern
Manitoba/southern Alberta:
The outrageous fires in Idaho Panhandle and western Montana are
still producing very very very dense plumes of smoke that are moving
northeasterly then easterly across the areas mentioned in the title. The
densest portion of smoke has covered Idaho Panhandle, all of Montana,
northern South Dakota, Upper Great Lakes, Middle Mississippi Valley,
and all of North Dakota. All the other areas are covered by dense smoke
but not so dense as these areas.

Middle and Lower Mississippi Valleys:
There are a lot small agricultural fires were producing thin to moderately
dense plumes of smoke.

Eastern coast and southern coast states:
The residual smoke from the large fires in Idaho and Montana has formed
a area of moderately dense smoke which covered all the eastern coast
states from Maine all the way to Florida. Some thin to moderately dense
plume has covered south of the southern coast states.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
