DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0205Z UTC August 19, 2007

California/Nevada:
The large fire in Santa Barbara County in southern California continues to
produce extensive smoke over the Southwest. Very dense smoke extended to
the northeast over western Kern County and southern Tulare County. Light
and moderately dense smoke drifted southward over the Pacific. Moreover,
a swath of moderately dense to locally dense smoke across Nevada and
southern Idaho into southern Montana where it has merged with the smoke
from the large fires in Idaho and Montana. Another fire in western San
Luis Obispo county is producing a moderately dense to dense plume of
smoke that is swirling around then moving to the north into southern
San Benito county.

Oregon:
A large fire in southeastern Grant county is producing a locally very
dense plume of smoke that is moving northeasterly across Idaho-Oregon
border in Wallowk county of northeastern Oregon.

British Columbia:
A fire in southern British Columbia near Washington border is producing
a moderately dense to dense plume of smoke that is moving northward.

Idaho/Montana/North Dakota/Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba/eastern US/
Gulf of Mexico:
Numerous persistent fires in Idaho and Montana caused very dense smoke
that pushed northward over southern Alberta, southern Manitoba and
southern Saskatchewan, then into North Dakota. Thin smoke extended
eastward across the Northern Plains, the Midwest and into the Middle
Atlantic Region. The thin to moderately dense smoke has covered the
eastern half of the continental US and eastern half of Gulf of Mexico.

Minnesota/Manitoba:
Two fires in Roslou and Woods counties of northern Minnesota are producing
puffs of thin smoke that are moving northward into southern Manitoba of
Canada. A fire just south of Lake Manitoba is producing a thin plume of
smoke that is moving mainly west.

North Carolina/Georgia/Tennessee/Florida:
A fire in Robeson county of southern North Carolina is producing a thin
to moderately dense plume of smoke that is spreading to both the east
and west. A fire in Catoosa of northern Georgia is producing a thin
plume of smoke that is moving northwesterly into southern Tennessee. A
fire in Santa Rosa county of western Florida Panhandle is producing a
thin plume of smoke that is moving northerly into southern Oklahoma. A
fire near Everglades National Park in southern Florida is producing a
thin plume of smoke that is moving to the west.

Yukon and Northwest Territories:
Two fires in central Yukon province of Canada are producing thin plumes
of smoke that are moving northward. A fire south of Great Bear Lake is
producing a thin plume of smoke that is moving northerly. A fire south
of Great Slave Lake is producing a thin plume of smoke that is moving
northerly.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
