DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1445Z UTC August 19, 2007

California/Nevada:
The large fire in Santa Barbara County in southern California has subsided
somewhat this morning but remnant smoke covers an area to the northeast
including much of central Nevada where it combines with smoke from a fire
in northern Eureka county. This smoke trails up into eastern Idaho and
western Wyoming.

Northern Rockies/ Canadian Rockies/ High Plains:
A trough has pushed into the Pacific Northwest overnight with lots
of clouds and some light rain covering Washington and Oregon this
morning. However, smoke from numerous persistent fires in Idaho and
Montana continues to cover most of Montana and the southern portions of
Alberta and Saskatchewan. This smoke is somewhat obscured by weather
clouds but covers much of the Dakotas and then eastward across northern
Minnesota, southern Manitoba and Lake Superior.

Yukon and Northwest Territories:
North of a cloudy region, some smoke can be seen in southern and central
Northwest Territories including the Great Slave Lake.

Eastern United States:
A mixture of thin smoke and haze covers an area from the Tennessee Valley
to the Carolinas and then out into the coastal waters off the Atlantic
seaboard. This area also includes the northern halves of Mississippi,
Alabama, and Georgia.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
