DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0120Z UTC August 19, 2007

California/Nevada:
The large fire in Santa Barbara County in southern California
continues to produce extensive smoke over the Southwest. Very dense
smoke extended to the northeast over western Kern County and southern
Tulare County. Moreover, a swath of moderately dense to locally dense
smoke across Nevada and southern Idaho into southern Montana where it
has merged with the smoke from the large fires in Idaho and Montana. A
swath of thin smoke is swirling just north of the Santa Barbara fires.

Idaho/Montana/Dakotas/Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba:
Numerous persistent fires in Idaho and Montana are still burning and
producing smoke; however, a large cloud system has covered almost all the
fire areas except the firer in Blaine county of central Idaho. Therefore,
only limited smoke can be seen in satellite imagery this evening, which
has covered probably Idaho, Montana, southern Alberta, Saskatchewan,
and Dakotas.

Eastern US:
A swath of thin to moderately dense smoke has covered most portion of
the eastern half of continental US.

Kansas:
A fire in northern Edwards county of southern Kansas is producing a thin
plume of smoke that is moving both northwesterly and southeasterly.

Gulf of Mexico:
A swath of thin to moderately dense smoke has covered western half of
Gulf of Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
