DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z UTC August 21, 2007

California/Southwest US/Nevada/Utah:
Very dense smoke extended 250 km to the northeast from the Zaca complex
in southern California. Residual dense smoke, apparent only with the
setting sun, shrouded northern Arizona and New Mexico while moderately
dense smoke extended from the central Sierras northeastward into central
Utah. Another fire erupted this evening in extreme western Santa Barbara
County along the coast resulting in moderate smoke that spread slowly to
the east. A fire in Tulare County California has resulted in a narrow,
light plume of smoke that reached 60km to the south.

Idaho/Dakotas/Wyoming/Nebraska:
Cloud cover precluded detection of most fires and smoke across northern
Idaho and Montana. Only residual moderately dense smoke was seen with
the setting sun across Wyoming, the Dakotas and Nebraska. Moderately
dense smoke extended 75 km to the northeast of a blaze along the Utah
counties of Millard and San Pete while another plume extended 45 km to
the east northeast of a fire along Utah's Box Elder County and Idaho's
Oneida County.

Michigan:
A light plume of smoke extended 105 km northwest of the Sleeper Lake
fire in Luce County.

Mississippi:
A fire in Lincoln County produced a light plume of smoke that extended
205 km to the north.

The Atlantic:
Residual smoke from the northwestern US fires lingers off the Eastern
Seaboard.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
