DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1655Z UTC August 21, 2007

California:

A small area of smoke is barely visible southeast of Santa Barbara.

Southwest: A large area of dispersed smoke was visible form northeast
Arizona southeastward into Central and Eastern New Mexico.  With the
higher sun angle this smoke is no longer visible.

Northwest:  The large area of smoke visible yesterday is not visible at
this time.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
