DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z UTC August 26, 2007
Montana/Idaho: The numerous wildfires scattered across western Montana and central to south central Idaho flared up again this afternoon resulting in massive moderately dense to dense smoke plumes which spread quickly to the east-northeast. High level cirrus clouds also moved across a portion of this region which hindered additional details concerning the density and the extent of some of the smoke. Wyoming: A burst of dense smoke was observed early this evening moving to the east-northeast from a fire in western Park County of northwestern Wyoming. California/Nevada/southern Idaho: The ongoing fires in Santa Barbara County of southern California continued to emit large quantities of moderately dense to dense smoke which moved mainly in a north to north-northeasterly direction during the day. Some of the thinner smoke from today and residual smoke from yesterday had fanned out as well to the east into west central and south central Nevada. Some of the smoke may even have moved farther to the northeast into central and even northeastern Nevada. However, blowing dust/sand from some of the dry lake beds primarily in northwestern and western Nevada may be responsible for much of what is seen in visible imagery extending from central Nevada across southern Idaho. This area of what is believed to be primarily blowing dust/sand was moving to the east-northeast. Washington/Northern Idaho Panhandle: A combination of smoke from several fires as well as some blowing dust was visible across central and eastern Washington moving to the northeast into the northern panhandle of Idaho. Arizona: Early in the day, moderately dense to locally dense smoke was visible moving and fanning out mainly in an easterly direction from fires located in central Coconino County of northern Arizona. Clouds moved across the area later in the day preventing any further details concerning the smoke. North Central US: Residual patches of thin smoke primarily from the Montana/Idaho fires and also perhaps a very small contribution from the Santa Barbara County California fires were seen moving to the east over Wyoming and Nebraska, the Dakotas, southern Minnesota, Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois.
