DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1602Z UTC August 26, 2007

Montana/Idaho/Northern Plains:
The increasing wild fires scattered across central Idaho and western
Montana caused a plume of moderately dense and dense smoke that extended
eastward to the Dakotas. Dense smoke reaches into extreme SE Saskatchewan
and S Manitoba, Canada. Thin smoke and haze were observed over the Middle
and Upper Mississippi Valley.

Eastern United States:
Thin remnant smoke and haze stretch from the Middle Atlantic States to
Coastal New England. Another area of thin smoke and haze is visible just
off the Southeast Coast and over Florida.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
