DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z August 31, 2007

Idaho/Montana/Northern and Central US/Southern Canada:
The ongoing wildfires primarily in central and south central Idaho and
western Montana continued to emit large quantities of moderately dense to
dense smoke which moved generally to the east-northeast across Montana
into the Dakotas and the southern portions of Alberta, Saskatchewan,
and Manitoba provinces in southern Canada. The smoke thinned out in
density as it then spread farther to the south and southeast over parts
of Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Iowa,
Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.

Southern and Southeastern US/Middle Atlantic States:
Areas of haze were noted in early morning visible imagery over the
Southern, Southeastern, and Middle Atlantic regions of the US from Texas
to the Delmarva. It is not definitely known if any residual smoke from the
western fires is present in this haze, although it remains a possibility.

Alaska:
A patch of moderately dense smoke was present this morning generally
moving to the south from fires between Ft. Yukon and Circle in east
central Alaska.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
