DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0212Z September 04, 2007

California/Nevada/Oregon:
A big fire along Lassen and Plumas counties border in northern California
is producing a very dense plume of smoke that is moving northeasterly
into northwestern corner of Nevada, where another fire is producing a
moderately dense plume of northeasterly smoke that crossed the Oregon
and Nevada border into southern Oregon. A fire in northwestern Pershing
county of Nevada is producing a moderately dense to locally dense plume
of smoke that is moving northeasterly into southern Mumboldt county of
northern Nevada. A fire along Santa Clark-Stanislaus county boundary
in California is producing a locally dense plume of smoke that is
mainly moving northerly then easterly into northern Joaquin county of
California. A fire in Los Angeles county is producing a very dense plume
of smoke that is moving northerly and just crossed the Los Angeles-Kern
county border into southern Kern county. A fire in northern Jefferson
county is producing a locally dense plume of smoke that is moving both
northerly into southern Washington and easterly into eastern Crook county.

Idaho/Montana:
The outrageous fires in central Idaho and western Montana are still
producing very dense plumes of smoke that are moving east northeasterly
and the densest portion of the smoke has covered central Idaho and western
half of Montana. The residual smoke from both this morning's burning and
yesterday's has covered the area ranges from central Montana to central
Great Lakes.

Wyoming:
A fire in western Lincoln county is producing a very dense plume of
smoke that is moving southeasterly into southern Lincoln county. A fire
in western Sherioan county of northern Wyoming is producing a very dense
plume of smoke that is moving northeasterly into southern Montana.

Alberta:
A fire in southern Alberta of Canada is producing a moderately dense
plume of smoke that is moving northeasterly.

Kansas/northern Texas:
Several fires in southern Kansas and northern Texas are producing puffs
of smoke that are moving mainly northward.

Alaska:
A fire north of Gates of the Arctic National Parks & Pres is producing a
moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving northerly. The fire just

thin smoke that is drifting around the area.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
