DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z September 05, 2007

California/Nevada/SW Idaho/E Oregon:
The Moonlight fire in N Plumas county is producing extremely dense smoke
that is oozing SW down the slopes into the northern and central valley
from Corning, CA south to Modesto, CA with a bit of thin to moderate
smoke lifting up over the eastern flanks of the Costal mtns in Lake
county and N Napa county. A large upper low is centered over SW ID
this morning and is wrapping the very dense smoke from last night
from the afore described area E across Sierra/Placer across S Lake
Tahoe to NW Nye county, NV to the Diamond Mtn Range in NE Nye county,
to around the split in US-93/Alt US-93 northward across E Elko county
then into the center of the upper low covering all of the western Snake
River Plain including the towns of Twin Falls, Boise, Mountain Home and
Ontario. Thin smoke covers all of N NV north of the dense line of smoke
and includes thin to moderate smoke over low level clouds in OR from
119W to the east. Thin to moderate smoke from the Central ID and NW MT
fire can be seen on the periphery of clouds over N ID and NW MT.

S California:
The Lick fire along the Santa Clara/Stanislaus county line is producing
a fan of moderate smoke that extends between SSW and SSE to Salinas and
SW Merced county. Thin smoke from last night's burning is drifting in
multiple diections but covers the southern valley and southern coastal
rangs over S Monterey, San Luis Obispo, the SW half of Fresno, Kings
and NE Kerns and extreme W Tulare counties.

Atlantic Ocean/Delmarva/E VA/E NC/SC/GA:
Thin smoke and haze from the ID/MT fires over the past week or so can
still be traced (particularly over water) from 36N68W in a 1.5 degree wide
line to Cape Hatteras, NC and is slowly drifting south. The area fans out
a bit as it nears the coastline to cover portions of the Delmarva from
DE south and the Norfolk,VA vicinity of E VA. Haze with some embedded
smoke can be seen over the low piedmount areas of NC/SC/ and N GA.

Minnesota/Wisconsin/NW Iowa/Illinois/Indiana:
Thin to moderate smoke and haze can be seen moving north ahead of a
southerly flow in advance of the upper low over KS/NE OK. This smoke
covers nearly all of WI/IL/IN and much of Lake Michigan with poritons
of IA and MN from Keokuk to Des Moines to Siuox City along the MN/SD
line to around the Minnesota River over to Duluth, MN to Menominee, MI.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
