DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0210Z September 11, 2007

Alaska:
The bright fire in the central North Slope, north of the Brooks Range, is
under dense cloud cover so it is difficult to see its smoke plume. However
the AVHRR NOAA-18 visible imagery at 22:01Z showed that the plume with
very dense smoke extends about 113km from the fire toward the east.

Idaho/Montana/Washington/Oregon/Wyoming:
The numerous fires in central Idaho are still burning and producing
moderately dense to locally dense plumes of smoke that are mainly
swirling around in central Idaho. However, the residual smoke from this
morning's burning has formed a large area with thin smoke which has
covered western half of Oregon and southeastern corner of Washington. A
fire in northeastern corner of Jefferson county of Oregon is producing
a moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving easterly into northern
Jefferson and souther Wasco counties. A fire in northern Ravalli county
of Montana is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving
easterly across Granite county into Powell county of Oregon. A fire in
southern Ravalli county is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke
that is moving easterly into southeastern corner of Ravalli county. A
fire in Ferry county of Washington is producing a moderately dense plume
of smoke that is moving northward. A fire in northern Chelan county
of Washington is producing a moderately dense plume of smoke that is
moving northward. A fire in Kittitas county of Washington is producing a
moderately dense to locally dense plume of northwesterly smoke. A fire
in southwestern Lincoln county of Wyoming is producing a locally very
dense plume of smoke that is moving northerly and has covered southern
half of the county.

California/Utah/Nevada/Colorado:
The big fire in Plumas National Forest of Plumas county of northern
California is producing a very dense plume of smoke that is moving to
the east; the residual smoke from this fire has formed a elongated area
ranged from the Pacific to eastern Colorado. The most dense portion of the
smoke is influencing northeastern California and central Nevada and the
medium portion of the smoke has covered northern half of California and
the adjacent coast areas, central Nevada and Utah, and eastern Colorado. A
fire in northwestern corner of San Diego county is producing a moderately
dense to locally dense plume of smoke that is swirling around northwestern
San Diego, Orange, and western Riverside counties. Two fires in Ventura
county of California is producing thin plumes of smoke that are moving
northeasterly into western Los Angeles county.

Texas/Louisianan/Mississippi/Alabama/Georgia:
Several fires in Jasper, Newton, and Tyler counties of Texas are producing
thin to moderately dense plumes of smoke. Numerous fires in Louisianan,
Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia are producing thin to moderately dense
plumes of smoke.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
