DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 18, 2007
Idaho/Montana/South Central Canada/Northern Plains: The large wildfires seen in central Idaho and western Montana produced a large amount of moderately dense to dense smoke last night that can be seen moving throughout Montana and into southern Saskatchewan/Manitoba and northern North Dakota. This area of smoke has moved a little farther northeast today into central Manitoba and across Lake Winnipeg into western/central Ontario. The smoke in Ontario is light. Currently the fires in central Idaho are producing light to moderately dense smoke that is moving east SE into southwest Montana. Although smoke most likely extends farther east, cloud cover is blocking the full view of smoke. California: In northern California in the counties of Colusa and Glenn, (along/near the interstate 5) multiple fires are emitting light to moderate smoke south to southeast in direction. Smoke is not reaching very far and is staying mostly within county borders. In southern California the fire in San Bernardino county (near Big Bear Lake) is producing light to moderately dense smoke east SE into Riverside county. Southeast Missouri/Southwest Illinois: Multiple agricultural/prescribed burns are producing a large light to moderately dense smoke plume moving north along the Illinois/Missouri border. Lower/Middle Mississippi Valley/Southeast/Southern Plains: Numerous fires across the southern US are producing light to moderate smoke moving in a westerly direction. A majority of these fires are agriculturally based and are emitting smoke from around two to four hours. J Kibler
