DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z September 23, 2007

Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio:
Thin remnant smoke mixed with haze could be seen in the first few visible
satellite images of the day. Areas affected are Kansas (excluding
western Kansas), eastern Nebraska, almost all of Iowa (which is also
where the smoke is most dense), northern Missouri, central Illinois,
central Indiana, and central Ohio. The smoke presumably originated from
yesterday's agricultural burns in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas.
Most of the smoke area is quasi-stationary but the area over Iowa is
drifting slowly northward.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
