DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 24, 2007

Kansas:
Several of the agricultural fires throughout Kansas are producing very
brief, light plumes of smoke that are moving to the north.

Oregon:
A fire in Klamath County flared up late in the evening and is producing
a moderately dense to dense plume of smoke that is moving to the south
southeast just reaching the northern borders of California and Nevada.

Alaska:
The large fire in northern Alaska continues to burn this evening and
produce large amounts of very dense smoke that is moving both to the
north and to the west.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
