DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z OCTOBER 12, 2007

Arizona:
Multiple fires are burning in the counties of Yavapai and Coconino
producing 100-150 km long plumes of light to moderately dense smoke. The
smoke is moving towards the northeast and is reaching as far as Navajo
and Apache counties.
A small fire in Apache county is producing light to moderately dense
smoke moving northeast into northwest New Mexico.

California:
A fire in Mariposa county (Southern Yosemite National Park) is emitting
a light to moderately dense plume of smoke that is moving north into
Tuolumne, Alpine and Mono counties.
In Fresno county (Sequoia National Forest) a fire is burning and emitting
light to moderately dense smoke northeast, but staying within county
borders.

South Dakota:
In Pennington county a light plume of smoke extending over 100 km from
the source is moving east into Meade and Haakon counties.
A smaller fire to the north of Pennington in Lawrence county is emitting
a light plume of smoke moving southeast but staying within county borders.

Kansas:
Fires producing light to moderately dense plumes of smoke moving north
can be seen burning in the counties of Greeley, Wichita, Finny, and Gray.
The smoke from these fires extend 75-125 km and reach parts of eastern
Colorado and nearing the Nebraska border.

Southeast/Lower and Middle Mississippi Valley/Southern and Central Plains:
Numerous agricultural/prescribe burns continue to be seen in most of
the southern and central US. Some of these fires are producing smoke
that can be seen in satellite imagery in South Carolina, Georgia,
Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and
South Dakota. Most of the smoke plumes are fairly small and consist of
light to moderately dense smoke.

British Columbia:
There are numerous fires burning in central and southern British Columbia
but cloud cover is hindering smoke detection. The few plumes that can
be seen consist of mostly light smoke and extend mostly northeastward.

Western Ontario/Manitoba:
Fires in/around Trout Lake in western Ontario are producing light to
moderately dense smoke moving west and reaching parts of eastern Manitoba.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
