DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z OCTOBER 25, 2007

California/Baja California:
The large wildfires throughout San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside and
Los Angeles counties continue to produe massive amounts of extremely
dense smoke. The smoke is spreading local to the large fires and then
eventually moving to the west out over the Pacific Ocean. Visible smoke
can be seen extending 1600 KM off the California coastline. The densest
smoke is hovering over the coast just north of San Diego.

Texas:
Several large fires flared up late in the evening on the Gulf Coast of
Galveston and Chambers counties. These fires are producing very dense
smoke and are extending nearly 350 KM to the southeast out into the Gulf
of Mexico.

Kansas/Colorado:
Several agricultural fires in southeast Colorado and southwest Kansas
are producing light plumes of smoke that are mainly moving to the south.

Idaho/Montana:
Fires throughout northcentral Idaho and western Montana are producing a
range of moderately dense to dense smoke plumes that are all moving in
a northeasterly direction.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
