DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z OCTOBER 26, 2007

Florida:
A large fire flared up on the border of Liberty and Calhoun counties
this afternoon and was producing a small plume of very dense smoke that
was moving to the northeast.

California/Baja California:
The large fires in southwest California and northwest Baja California
continue to burn and produce massive amounts of smoke. The smoke is
not nearly as dense as it has been over the previous days and the smoke
is now moving inland over the entire southern half of California, into
southern Nevada and western Arizona. The densest smoke can be found in
Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The largest fire is found on the
border of Orange and Riverside counties.

Texas/Louisiana:
Many fires on the northern Gulf Coast of Texas are producing moderately
dense to dense smoke that is moving to the southeast out over the
Gulf of Mexico. The smoke is extending nearly 200km at some points.
The largest of the fires is found in Galveston County.

There is also a large fire located on Louisiana's southwest Gulf Coast
in Cameron county that is producing a large amount of dense smoke that
is moving south out over the Gulf of Mexico.

In northern Texas there are several fires producing moderately dense
smoke that is mainly staying local to the actual source, but slightly
drifting in a northern direction.

Kansas:
A few agricultural fires in southwest Kansas are producing light to
moderately dense smoke that is flaring out in several directions.

New Mexico/Colorado:
In northern New Mexico and southern Colorado there are fires producing
light plumes of smoke that are moving to the northeast and to the
southeast.

Arizona:
A fire in southern Coconino county is producing a plume of moderately
dense to dense smoke that is moving to the north northeast.

Ontario:
Several large fires that are spread across southern Ontario are producing
moderately dense to dense plumes of smoke that are moving to the north
or to the northeast. These range from the southwest border of Ontarior
to the southeast border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
