DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z OCTOBER 31, 2007

Georgia/Alabama/Mississippi:
Several smoke plumes were seen, mainly across the southern half of these
states. The plumes were mainly light to locally moderately dense and
were moving to the west, except for a smoke plume in St Clair county n
northern Alabama which was moving to the north.

Eastern Texas/Louisiana/Arkansas:
A large blaze in southeast Cameron parish was producing moderately
dense to locally dense smoke much of the day. The smoke was moving
to the west-southwest and extended along the Texas Gulf coast to the
Galveston area. Several fires across the northern half of Louisiana,
notably in De Soto, northeast Bienville, western Caldwell and southern
Frnaklin parishes, were producing narrow smoke plumes that were light
to locally moderately dense and moving north. A fire in Hardin county
Texas had a moderately dense smoke plume that extended to the northwest.

Earlier in the day, an area of light residual smoke was seen extending
from roughly Austin to Paris in east Texas and was about 75 miles wide.

Nebraska:
A narrow plume of thin smoke extended to the east from central Dawes
county into northwest Sheridan.

Southern Canada/North Dakota:
An incredible number of mainly agricultural fires was seen across
southern Manitoba, Saskatchewan and northern North Dakota. Smoke plumes
were not detected with these fires, although clouds were hindering smoke
detection. But the sheer number of fires would indicate smoke emissions
that are not being detected by satellite.

Idaho:
Fires in northern Idaho in Latah and western Clearwater counties were
producing narrow plumes of smoke that extended to the northeast.

Oregon:
Numerous fires in Oregon were producing mainly small plumes (within
50 miles) of light to moderately dense smoke. The larger plumes were
seen along the central Klamath/Lake border which was moving north, in
northwest Harney county which was drifting to the northeast and another
over northeast Baker county which was moving to the northwest.

California:
A small plume of light to moderately dense smoke from a fire in western
Orange county was fanning out to the northwest.

Aizona:
Several fires were seen along the periphery of Coconino county. A fire
on the north rim of the Grand Canyon was producing light to moderately
dense smoke that was moving to the west and south. A fire in far western
Coconino had a light to moderately dense plume that extended to the
west. A fire in extreme southeast Coconino had a narrow plume of thin
smoke that extended north and then northeast into central Navaho. A fire
in northern Apache county was producing light to moderately dense smoke
that was mainly drifting to the west.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
