DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z November 01, 2007

Gulf Coast:
Numerous fires with light to moderately dense smoke plumes were seen
over Georgia, the Florida anhandle, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana
and east Texas. Most of the plumes were near the coast and all of
the plumes were moving to the south. The most extensive plumes were
associated with fires in southwest Clay county Alabama, which extended
into Butler county, and Sanata Rosa and Liberty counties in Florida,
which had plumes extending well into the Gulf. A moderately dense to
dense plume of smoke was associated with a fire in San Jacinto county
Texas and extended to the southeast.

Southwest Kansas/Texas Panhandle/southeast Colorado:
Several fires in this region had brief puffs of smoke that quickly
moved north.

Arizona/New Mexico/southwest Colorado:
Two fires near the Archuleta/La Plata border in Colorado were producing
narrow plumes of thin smoke that were drifting to the east. A fire in
central Sandoval county New Mexico was producing a light to moderately
dense smoke plume that extended east into Santa Fe county. Several fires
were noted in Coconino county. Two fires were in northwest Coconino on
the north rim of the Grand Canyon and were producing moderately dense
to dense smoke that was spreading out and covering most of the northern
portion of the county. A fire in the extreme western part of the county
was producing a small but moderately dense smoke plume thaty extended
to the northeast. Another fire in the southeast part of the county had a
small light to moderately dense smoke plume that extended to the east. A
small plume of light smoke was seen with a fire in central Yavapai county
drifting to the northeast.

Southern California:
A fire in eastern Orange county was producing a light to moderately
dense smoke plume that was mianly drifting to the west and off the
coast. Another blaze along the San Diego/Riverside border near Palomar
had a plume of light smoke that was drifting to the northwest.

There was also a large area that is likely a mixture of residual smoke
mixed with haze that was seen over most of the south central valley.

Oregon/Idaho:
A fire in southeast Lake county Oregon had a plume of light to moderately
dense smoke drifting to the southeast. A fire in western Clearwater county
Idaho had a plume of moderately dense to dense smoke that extended east
into northeast Idaho county.

British Columbia:
A large number of fires were seen over much of British Columbia. Several
smoke plumes were noted with the fires in the southern portion of the
province and all of the plumes were extending to the east-southeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
