DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z November 05, 2007

Arizona:
A fire in southern Coconino County of central Arizona was emitting at
least a thin to perhaps localized moderately dense smoke plume which
appeared initially to be moving to the north but has shifted to a more
westerly direction. Slightly farther to the west, a fire in central
Gila County was responsible for a thin smoke plume which may be moving
slightly to the northwest although current light and variable winds in
the area suggest little significant directional movement to the smoke.

Kansas/Missouri/Illinois:
Very early morning GOES-West visible imagery with the favorable low sun
angle indicated a rather narrow swath of haze extending from eastern
Kansas across central Missouri into central Illinois. This band of
haze appeared to coincide with a surface frontal boundary which moved
southeastward during the morning. The contents of the area of haze is
not really known but it may consist of some blowing dust along with
other pollutants concentrated along the frontal boundary.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
