DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0315Z November 30, 2007

California:
The fire near the Lick Observatory in Santa Clara County continues to
burn producing a plume of light to moderate smoke with a small area
of dense smoke. This plume extends into western Stanislaus County.
A fire in southern El Dorado County is producing a narrow plume of light
to moderate smoke that extends northward. A fire in Mariposa County is
producing a narrow smoke plume that extends northeastward.

Southeastern and Southcentral U.S.:
Numerous agricultural burns are detected but only about 20 of them have
smoke plumes large enough to see in GOES satellite imagery. These plumes
consist of light to moderate smoke and extend mostly toward the south.
Some of the more significant plumes are from fires in Escambia County,
Alabama (that are producing plumes extending into extreme western
Florida), a fire in Wayne County, Mississippi, and a fire in Refugio
County, Texas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
