DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z December 02, 2007

Northern California:
Multiple fires burning in the Sacramento Valley (Butte, Glenn, Colusa,
Sutter and Yolo counties) are emitting narrow plumes of light smoke north
across the region. Smoke is reaching as far north as Tehama county.
These fires have been producing smoke for nearly 6 hours and some
continue.

A fire in southern Sonoma county is producing a light plume of smoke
moving east into Solano, Napa, Yolo and Sacramento counties.

Hawaii:
Fires near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are producing mostly
light smoke with some moderate pockets moving east NE and extending
approximately 120-140 km offshore.

Southeast US:
Numerous fires are burning across the region with only a few seen
producing smoke in satellite imagery. The largest of these numerous
fires is located in Bryan county Georgia (southeast section of the state)
producing moderately dense smoke moving west into Evan, Bulloch, Tattnall
and Candler counties. Another fire in Mobile county Alabama is emitting
a long narrow plume of light smoke moving north into Washington county
Alabama and Greene county Mississippi.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
