DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z December 07, 2007

Southeast US:
A tremendous amount of fire activity was noted over the region this
evening. However, widespread high cloudiness overspread the region over
the late afternoon and early evening hours which made smoke detection
quite difficult. Some of the more noteworthy smoke plumes that were
detected were located in the following areas:

Louisiana/Texas:
Numerous smoke plumes were evident this evening that all appeared to be
mostly drifting to the north. The most significant smoke plumes were
located with a fires over southern Vernon and southern Winn parishes. Both
of these fires featured very dense smoke plumes that were drifting to
the north into Sabine and Jackson, respectively.

A fire located over western Cameron parish featured a moderate to
localized highly dense smoke plume that was drifting to the northwest
into Jefferson county Texas.

A fire over northern Montgomery county had a rather large but thin
smoke plume that was lifting rapidly north at sunset into the counties
of Houston and southern Cherokee.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
