DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 00Z December 15, 2007

Georgia:
A few smoke plumes were observed over several counties. Western Oglethorpe
county had a light plume moving east into western South Carolina. In south
Newton county, a light plume was seen moving east-southeast. Lastly,
a smoke plume in north Sumter county and another plume in east Schley
county, both light in density, were observed moving southeast. All smoke
plumes extended between 30 and 40 miles from the fires.

California:
Active hot spots were seen over northern and central California, however,
due to high cirrus and snow cover, smoke plumes were not observed by
the analyst. The lack of GOES-12 imagery also hindered smoke detection.

Hawaii:
A possible smoke plume was seen in visible imagery moving to the west
from the Kilauea volcano. This possible smoke plume was believed to be
due to lava burning vegetation.

EVANS

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
