THROUGH 0345Z December 28, 2007

Large fires near San Francisco or Caborca in NW Sonora (Mexico) are
producing moderately dense smoke plume that are moving south and extend to
near the northern portion of Isla Tiburon. The plume is about 50km wide.

SW Texas/N Mexico:
With a cyclone developing in the Texas panhandle, strong Swly flow is
pulling sand and dust from the dry areas of NE Chihuahua, N Coahuila
and the western panhandle of TX. The sand and dust is thin in density
except for isolated moderate sand plume that originate from dry lake
beds or sandy deserts such as Laguna de Cuervo north of Chihuahua (city).
The most prominent area extends from the Chihuahua/Texas boarder across
west Texas, over Midland/Odessa to the southern Cap Rock of TX. A cold
front is dropping south across N Chihuahua and western Texas since night
fall... so sand/dust plumes will orient more E-W across W and S Texas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
