THROUGH 0100Z December 30, 2007

Gulf of Mexico:
A large area of moderately dense smoke was located over the western Bay
of Campeche and then extended north towards the western Gulf of Mexico.
The smoke is originating from what appears to be fires from oil rigs off
the coast of the Laguna de Terminos in the state of Campeche in Mexico.
Widespread cloud cover off the Texas and Louisiana coasts is hindering
detection of any smoke over the far northwest Gulf of Mexico but it is
quite possible that at least thin smoke extends at low levels into the
western and central Gulf States.

Florida:
A fire over northwest Okeechobee county emitted a rather large plume of
high density smoke. At sunset the smoke plume was seen extending from
the point source towards the Cape Canaveral area.

Oklahoma:
A fire over northwest Lincoln county just northeast of Oklahoma City
earlier produced a small but rather dense smoke plume that was extending
to the northwest into Payne county.

Baja California/Sonora:
Numerous fires were detected this evening over the Colorado River Valley
of Baja California and the Sonora. Smoke from these fires congealed
into a moderate to locally dense smoke plume that was extending southeast
towards the Cerro del Pinacate.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
