DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z January 9, 2008

Southeastern U.S.
Although there are numerous agricultural burns, clouds have prevented
much smoke detection. However in Florida where there has been less
cloudiness, a few plumes of light smoke were seen extending mostly
westward or northward.

Texas:
Earlier today a fire in southeastern Willacy County produced a plume of
light smoke that extended southeastward reaching the Gulf. However the
fire is no longer as apparent in satellite imagery and it is not clear
if smoke is still being produced.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
