DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2332Z January 14, 2008

Georgia:
A fire in eastern Muscogee county has produced light to moderately dense
smoke that fanned from due E to SE... with the more dense smoke moving
eastward. The SEly moving plume has also melded with light smoke from
a fire in north central Marion county. Together the smoke extends out
as far as the Flint River and central Lake Blackshear.

Alabama:
A fire in far western Bibb county has produced light to moderate smoke
that is moving SEward to the Autauga/Elmore county line covering much
of central Chilton county. The smoke plume is about 25km wide.

Florida Panhandle:
A large number of thin to moderate smoke plumes can be seen through
approaching jet streak cirrus. Fires in C. Santa Rosa, SC Okaloosa, S
Walton, Bay, NC Gulf, and SC Franklin counties have similar plumes that
are moving due south from their respective sources out about 50-75km
(into the Gulf) with a width of about 10-15km.

Central Florida:
A fire in far SE Polk county is producing thin smoke that extends due
south about 45km and is about 10km wide.

S Mississippi:
Three fires in S MS have produced significant smoke plumes.
The most dense is of thin consistency and originates from a fire in SE
Forrest county that extends SSE where it melds with a much more intense
fire that is producing moderate to dense smoke along the Harrison/Stone
county line...where it expands more into a fan that moves S to SE into
the Gulf of Mexico.
A fire in SW Wayne county is producing thin smoke that extend due SE
toward the AL/MS state line.
A fire in central Scott county produce thin smoke that extends ESE across
S Newton and N Jasper counties. This plume is only about 5-10km wide.

Louisiana:
Aforementioned jetstreak cirrus is much more dense across LA... obscuring
the smoke from multiple fires in SW quarter of the state...including a
few along the coast in E Cameron and central Vermilion parish. All smoke
was thin to moderate in density and moving south before clouds moved in.

Texas:
A fire in central Wilbarger county produced a short puff of thin smoke
that is moving SE into NE Archer county. The plume is no more than 5km
wide and about 20km long.
A fire in far E Hansford county produced a small puff of thin to moderate
smoke that is moving SE currently crossing into N Roberts county.
A fire in extreme SE Hemphill county produced a large area of moderate
smoke that has moving SE into Oklahoma is about 60km long from NW to
SE and 27km wide from SW to NE. Currently is located over central
Beckham county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
