DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2232Z January 20, 2008

Louisiana:
A fire along the the Vermilion Bay south of Henry and east of Intracoastal
City produced a faint smoke plume that has moved WSW across White Lake
and currently off the coast south of Holly Beach to Oak Grove.
A small fire just NE of Sabine Pass and east of Johnson's Bayou has
produced a very faint plume of smoke that is about 5km wide and 20km
long extending into extreme SE Texas.

California:
A few small fires in the agricultural area south of the Salton Sea have
produced small puffs of moderate smoke that has been fading to thin
smoke as it drifts due E toward the AZ line.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
