DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2245Z January 21, 2008

Florida:
Multiple fires along the Franklin and Liberty county line have been
producing very faint smoke that has been moving due west throughout the
day but an increase in one of the fires in SE Liberty county increased
the density up to thin to moderate and it also rose a few hundred feet
higher in altitude. This has lead to a fanning of the plume from WNW
to WSW and extends to the Bay/Gulf county line.

Mississippi:
A fire in DeSoto Natl Forest in NE Harrison county is producing a large
moderately dense smoke plume that is moving NW and covers nearly all of
western Stone, NE Pearl River, SW Forrest and ext. SE Lamar counties. It
is about 22km wide and extends about 70km as of 2245Z.

Louisiana:
A large fire covering most of Point au Fer Island has been burning
since late last night, but not produced much smoke...though a small
faint plume can be seen moving W to NW into the Atchafalaya Bay...but
not more than 25km.

California:
Multiple fires in the agricultural farmlands south of the Salton Sea
are producing puffs of moderate smoke that quickly fade to thin smoke
as they drift due east into the desert toward AZ.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
