THROUGH 0300Z January 31, 2008
Updated for blowing dust... Western Texas/Southeastern New Mexico/Northern Mexico: Strong westerly and southwesterly winds blowing across northern Mexico were kicking up areas of blowing dust/sand which spread to the east and northeast across far western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. One particularly dense cloud of blowing dust/sand originated from a point source in northern Mexico and spread eastward across the southern portions of Hudspeth and Culberson counties. More blowing dust/sand was visible emanating from source regions in western Texas north of Midland and spreading northeastward across areas western and northwestern Texas including Lubbock and Childress. Texas: Three light smoke plumes in the north-central part of the state are observed moving to the north and extending out at least 50 miles from their sources. Florida: In the panhandle, four fires are producing light smoke plumes extending to the southwest and moving into the Gulf of Mexico. In southern Florida, in Collier County, a light smoke plume, extensive in size, is fanning out in a westward direction and moving into the Gulf of Mexico. Hawaii: Burning vegetation from Kilauea is producing a light smoke plume extending west. EVANS
