DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z February 1, 2008

Texas:
Strong winds behind a low pressure system has fanned out numerous smoke
plumes from numerous fires, especially over south Texas. Kerr, La Salle,
Frio, and Dimmit Counties have had the most fire and smoke activity
today. Light to moderate smoke plumes from these fires have been moving
towards the southeast and some of these plumes extend at least a hundred
miles from their sources. In addition, in central Texas, blowing dust
is evident from satellite imagery racing toward the south and east into
southeastern Texas, including the Houston and Galveston areas.

Hawaii:
Burning vegetation from Kilauea is producing a very light smoke plume
on satellite imagery moving in a westward fashion.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
