DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z February 5, 2008

Southeastern US:
A tremendous number of fires were detected especially across northern
Florida, southern Georgia, and southwestern South Carolina. Moderately
dense to even locally dense smoke was observed moving to the north
from fires located in Baker County and along the border of Liberty and
Franklin Counties in northern Florida. To the south, another rather
concentrated area of fires was noted over south central Florida. An
area of thin to localized moderately dense smoke was detected across
the region stretching from Palm Beach County to Osceola and Brevard
Counties. This smoke was partly attributed to a number of fires across
Palm Beach County as well as a fire near the Palm Beach-Martin border
and also one over northeastern Okeechobee County. Farther to the west,
a narrow swath of thin to moderately dense smoke was observed moving to
the north-northwest from fires in Hardee County.

Louisiana:
Several long thin smoke plumes were visible moving to the north from
fires located over parishes in extreme south central Louisiana.

Texas:
A rapidly developing moderately dense to dense smoke plume from a fire
in Kent County of west central Texas quickly spread northeastward during
the middle of the afternoon. Cloudiness moved across the area during
the late afternoon limiting further smoke detection.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
