DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z February 7, 2008

Texas:
Numerous fires have popped up during the course of the afternoon and
evening hours throughout much of the state. The most activity is along
the southeastern coastline of Texas stretching from Port Arthur to Corpus
Christi. In Matagorda County, a moderate smoke plume is moving towards
the southeast and over the Gulf of Mexico. In Jefferson, Galveston, and
Goliad Counties, light smoke plumes extending 50-100 miles from their
sources are also moving southeast over the Gulf of Mexico. Other smaller,
lighter smoke plumes are sporadic across Texas, with one cluster of fires
in northern Texas, and another cluster in the south-central portion of
the state.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
