DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z February 24, 2008

Texas:
In Northern Scurry County, a heavy smoke plume is moving into the rest of
the county, and the smoke plume becomes moderate in density as it moves
further east into Haskell County, some 35 miles away from the source.

In the southern part of Scurry County, a moderately dense smoke plume
is moving eastward into Fisher County.

In addition to there being smoke, there are also two large areas of
blowing dust in north-central Texas. One area of blowing dust extends from
Hockley County northeast 180 miles into extreme southwest Oklahoma. The
other area of blowing dust extends from Martin County northeast some
200 miles into extreme southwest Archer County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
