DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z February 28, 2008

Louisiana and Arkansas:

Complex of fires in Terrebonne County Louisiana resulted in a light
plume of smoke that extended for 200 km to the southeast into the Gulf.

Moderate to isolated dense plumes of smoke were moving southeast and
east of fires in Grant and Natchitoches counties in Louisiana.

Moderate to isolated dense plumes extended up to 200 km to the east
southeast of fires in Polk, Pike and Montgomery counties in Arkansas.

Texas:

Several fires along the central and upper coast resulted in light to
isolated moderately dense smoke that moved generally to the southeast
while fires inland in south Texas resulted in light to moderate smoke
plumes that moved to the north and northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
