DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2332Z March 17, 2008

New Jersey:
A fire near Howardsville in central Ocean county produced a plume of
thin smoke that is moving SE into the Atlantic. This plume is about
15km and extends about 100km from the source.

Southeast and Central US:
Some fires were producing thin to moderately dense smoke plumes a various
times throughout the day, but high and midlevel weather clouds have been
covering much of the Central and Southern states where the fires have
occurred...obscuring smoke detection at this time.

Alabama:
One fire in a break of clouds in extreme N Perry county (near the western
Bibb county line) is producing thin smoke that extends NNW about 60km
into NW Tuscaloosa county. The plume is about 5-10 km wide.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
