DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z March 20, 2008

Southeast Texas coast:
Fires in Matagorda and Calhoun counties are producing light smoke that
is extending south SE into the Gulf of Mexico.  Plumes extend over 100
km from source.

Southern Texas/Mexico border:
A large fire in southeast Brooks county is emitting moderately dense
to dense smoke southeast into Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo counties and
northern Mexico.

Texas Panhandle:
A fire in Hemphill county is emitting light smoke east into Roger Mills,
Custer, Beckham and Dewey counties in western Oklahoma.

Kansas:
A fire in southwest Gray county is emitting light smoke southeast
into Clark, Meade and Forde counties.  Smoke is also reaching northern
Oklahoma.

Hawaii:
Clouds block the full view of smoke from the Kilauea Volcano
lava flows burning vegetation. Smoke mixed with the volcanic steam/fog
(VOG) is seen moving to the west-northwest along the southern coast of
the Big Island to near 160W.

From Earlier Today
Mexico:
A fire in Mexico south of Monterrey, TX is producing locally dense
smoke plume extending 40 KM with lighter smoke extending 200 KM to
the southeast.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
