DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z March 26, 2008

Virginia:
Thick smoke extended 105 km to the northeast of a blaze in Alleghany
County.

Southeast:
Numerous ag fires in the Southeast resulted in generally light smoke
plumes that moved towards the north and northeast. Several plumes of
moderate density extended to the north northeast up to 80 km from their
source in:
Bullock, Barbour, Henry and Dale counties of Alabama and
Chattahoochee County, Georgia.

A blaze in Laurens County, South Carolina resulted in a thick plume
that extended 135 km to the northeast into North Carolina. A pall of
moderate smoke was generated by complexes of fires in Jefferson County
Florida as well as along the Grady County Georgia and Jefferson County
Florida border.

Southern California:
Dust was moving east northeast across western Los Angeles, western
Riverside, southwest San Bernardino, central San Diego and western
Imperial counties.

Hawaii:
Vog from Kilauea extended well to the west of the island chain.
Included within this area was an ash plume estimated to FL070 at 2230Z
that extended 30 km to the west before becoming obscured by clouds.
See http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/VAAC/messages.html for 6-hourly updates on
the ash plume.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
