DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z April 15, 2008

Kansas:
Hundreds of small agricultural burns took place this afternoon in the
eastern part of the state. Due to light and variable winds, most of the
smoke drifted off to the north, however, some of the plumes did move in
all different directions. In addition, there were quite a few moderate to
heavy smoke plumes, which extended between 25, to as much as, 75 miles
from their sources of origin. After looking at visible imagery before
dusk, most of the eastern third of Kansas was at least under light smoke.

Mississippi/Louisiana/Texas:
In Sabine County, in southeastern Texas, a heavy smoke plume was spotted
moving to the southeast at a fast clip. The last few images on visible
showed that the plume had extended some 150 miles from the source of
origin. In Louisiana, most notably in Rapides County, a heavy smoke plume
was also observed racing towards the southeast. This smome plume extended
at least 150 miles from its source. Other smoke plumes producing light
to moderate smoke were spotted in far western Mississippi, and also in
central Louisiana and east Texas, moving towards the southeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
