DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z April 18, 2008

Mississippi:
In Scott County, a moderate to heavy smoke plume was seen racing towards
to the north and extending out 100 miles from the source.

Kentucky:
Along the border of Hart and Edmonson Counties, a moderately dense smoke
plume was observed moving towards the north and east.

Missouri:
In Shannon County, a moderately dense smoke plume was seen moving towards
the north, however, due to clouds quickly filling in on imagery, the
analyst could only see the smoke plume extend out 75 miles or so.

Virginia:
In Smyth County, a heavy smoke plume earlier in the afternoon was
observed drifting towards the north and east. The smoke plume did not
seem to move too far away from the source.

Arizona:
In Greenlee County, a moderately dense smoke plume was seen moving
towards the southeast into far western New Mexico.

Southern California:
Blowing dust was observed moving west into San Bernardino and Riverside
Counties around 0200Z.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
