DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z May 1, 2008

Mid Atlantic/Southern New England:
An area of haze of unknown composition and unknown origin was detected
moving off the Mid Atlantic and Southern New England coasts and across
Long Island and southern New England.

New Mexico/Texas:
A fire in Torrance County, New Mexico, has resulted in a moderately dense
though fairly narrow plume extending 100 km to the east. A moderately
dense area of haze across northern Texas is believed to be residual
smoke from this fire.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
