DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z May 1, 2008

Mid Atlantic/Southern New England:
An area of haze of unknown composition and unknown origin was detected
moving off the Mid Atlantic and Southern New England coasts and across
Long Island and southern New England.

New Mexico/Texas:
A fire in Torrance County, New Mexico, has resulted in a moderately dense
though fairly narrow plume extending 100 km to the east. A moderately
dense area of haze across northern Texas is believed to be residual
smoke from this fire.

Florida:
Several fires in Florida were producing narrow plumes of smoke this
morning that were all moving to the west-northwest. One fire was in
the Canaveral National Seashore near Titusville and extended across
southern Volusia county. Another was a fire in southern Gilchrist near
Tyler. This fire has been burning all night and its plume reached into
southern Madison county. Another blaze was in western Hernando county
with its plume extending into the Gulf of Mexico. All of the plumes were
light to locally moderately dense.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
